Recognition to Fidel in the University of Ghana

As part of the program for the 92nd anniversary of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, the First Secretary of the Cuban embassy, Julio César Sánchez Martínez, delivered a Conference on the Life and Work of Fidel to Ghanaian students of Spanish language from the University of Ghana.

The Cuban diplomat emphasized Fidel's political activity as a university student, and also emphasized his legacy and foresight as a trainer of several generations of Cubans in the spirit of resistance and international solidarity, as well as their ties with the African continent. He recalled that the first African leader with whom he met was the then Prime Minister, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in September 1959 at the Theresa hotel in the Harlem neighborhood of New York during the sessions of the XV General Assembly of the United Nations. From that meeting it was agreed to establish diplomatic relations, which in December 2019 will be 60 years old.

The students learned that in 1983, as a result of an agreement between Fidel and the then Ghanaian Head of State, Jerry John Rawlings, bilateral cooperation in health and education was initiated, which has led to more than 1,200 health workers Cubans have cooperated in Ghanaian territory, while about 2,000 young Ghanaians have graduated from different specialties in Cuban classrooms. The students also appreciated photographs of Fidel's meetings with several African leaders such as: Ahmed Sekou Touré, Amílcar Cabral, Agostinho Neto, Thomas Sankara, Samora Machel, and Nelson Mandela.

The First Secretary answered questions from the students about the new address of Cuba; relations with the US; Fidel's role in shaping the political consciousness of the Cuban people; Fidel as a Pan-Africanist; the common elements between the peoples of Cuba and Ghana. In the Conference was also present the consular officer, Eulalia Cárdenas San Martín.
