KINGSTON, JAMAICA, 31st October, 2018.- The Parliament of Jamaica adopted unanimously and for the tenth consecutive occasion, a resolution to reject the criminal blockade the United States has imposed to Cuba during almost six decades.
The text of the resolution, presented by the Attorney General, Marlene Malahoo Forte, stresses that the economic, commercial and financial blockade constitutes the main obstacle to Cuba´s economic and social development and represents a violation of the International Law.
“The blockade, in its essence and objectives, constitutes an act of unilateral aggression and represents a transgression of the right to peace, development and security of a sovereign state”, reads the document.
It highlights, likewise, the permanence of this unilateral measure despite that last year, 191 Member States voted in favour of a resolution demanding the end of this cruel policy at United Nations.
The parliamentary session, held last afternoon, was addressed by a tenth legislators who coincided to denounce the new measures adopted by the Trump Administration aiming at tightening the blockade, and the setback in the Cuba-US relations.
The Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Peter Phillips, expressed that the blockade is also a threat to regional stability. “Cuba is our closest neighbour but it´s also a sister nation. A threat against Cuba is also a threat against the Caribbean”, expressed the legislator.
Furthermore, the Minister of Health, Dr. Christopher Tufton, listed some of the blockade´s affectations to the Cuban people, in particular, in the health care area.
The Minister availed the opportunity, likewise, to state that despite this cruel policy, Cuba continues to be a sister to other nations, in particular Jamaica, and contributes with its army of health professionals to improve Jamaicans´ quality of life.
The debate, that lasted a little more than two hours, served, as well, to hear the testimony and expressions of solidarity from Jamaican legislators who, thanks to the spirit of solidarity of the Government of Cuba, had benefitted with scholarships to study in the Greater of the Antilles.
Attorney General, Malahoo Forte, concluded the heartfelt session by expressing that her country and Government will continue denouncing the immoral and illegal policy of blockade and will keep accompanying the Cuban people in the fight to have it ended.
