United Nations panel recognizes exemplary South-South cooperation projects led by Cuba.

New York, 4 December 2018. Cuba chaired the United Nations interactive panel entitled: “The role of South-South cooperation and triangular cooperation in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, represented by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Ms. Ileana Núñez Mordoche.

Also present as panelists were Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); Luis Felipe Tavares, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities and Minister of Defense of Cape Verde; and Jorge Chediek, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and Envoy of the Secretary-General for South-South Cooperation, who lauded Cuba as an example of a country that promotes and materializes South-South cooperation projects.

Other members of the panel included Antonio Pedro, Regional Director of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Sub-regional Office for Central Africa; and Mario Pezzini, Director of the OECD Development Center.

The panel discussed the potential of multilateral cooperation and the specific role of South-South cooperation in eradicating poverty, fighting inequalities and promoting the economic, social and environmental development of developing countries, especially middle-income countries. In the course of the ensuing debate, delegations from UN member countries made interesting proposals and contributions aimed at increasing and strengthening the potentials of South-South and triangular cooperation to overcome the challenges facing middle-income countries.
