New York, January 29, 2019. "On January 1, 1959, a momentous change took place in the history of my country. With the victory of the people’s army led by Fidel Castro, the Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution, almost 100 years of struggle of my people to achieve their true independence came to an end"; these were the introductory remarks of Ambassador Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, at the reception marking the 60th anniversary of the Triumph of the Revolution.
In the presence of representatives of the Diplomatic Missions accredited to the United Nations, senior officials of the Secretariat of the Organization, members of the solidarity movement with Cuba, Cuban residents, among others, Rodríguez Camejo pointed out in her commemorative speech that the history of the revolution has not been an easy path, but a hard battle to build a society with all and for the good of all, that was the dream of the Apostle of the Cuban independence and National Hero José Martí, whose 166th birth anniversary was recently commemorated.
She recalled that Cuba has not only tried to build a society where the achievement of the greatest possible social justice is the major premise, but also has established as one of the cornerstones of its foreign policy, the practice of solidarity and internationalism with the peoples who need it. This, together with an independent foreign policy based on noble principles, such as strict respect for international law, self-determination and the sovereignty of States, in favor of the rights of peoples, peace, justice and solidarity with the best causes of humanity, is something that Cubans take pride in, and that other nations of the world admire, said the senior official.
The Caribbean diplomat in her statement honored the memory of the Commander in Chief and Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution, and reiterated the strong willingness of the Cuban people to build an increasingly socialist, democratic, prosperous and sustainable society, whose next expression will be the constitutional referendum to be held on February 24 throughout Cuba.
