Ambassador of Cuba makes a work visit to the city of Galway.

Galway, june, 2019. Promoted by the NGO Equal Ireland, the Cuban Ambassador to Ireland, Hugo René Ramos Milanés and Consul Soraya Torres Jaime, made a working visit to the city of Galway, located on the Atlantic coast.

Cuban diplomats were received at the City Council by Neil McNelis, Mayor of Galway, several Councilors and executive officers.

Mayor McNelis in his welcoming remarks highlighted the friendship ties between Ireland and Cuba, recalling the visit made by President Michael D. Higgins to Cuba in 2016 and the signing of a bilateral cooperation agreement that covers broad areas. He also mentioned the bilateral cooperation links in areas such as education and culture, which for both countries are fundamental. He stressed that Galway will be the European cultural capital in 2020 and expressed the hope that during the celebrations it will be possible to have some representation of Cuban culture.

For his part, the Cuban ambassador thanking for the invitation and fraternal welcome in the city of Galway, recalled that next October will celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Ireland, although the links between both peoples and cultures are very long-standing. This event will be celebrated with various activities in both countries that will surely contribute to the strengthening of bilateral ties, as will surely occur with the opportunities provided by the work meetings that will be held during the stay in Galway.

Ambassador Ramos Milanes, taking up the words of Mayor McNelis, made the occasion to express deep gratitude for the sustained solidarity of the Irish people to put an end to the unjust economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government on the Cuban people, expressed through the action of very varied organizations, political forces and institutions. He stressed that this solidarity is especially welcome at a time when the Trump administration is committed to intensify this blockade and internationalize its application and pointed out that any new cooperation project is a praiseworthy and welcome effort, destined to make such pretensions fail.
