The 18th session of the General Conference of UNIDO, which met in Abu Dhabi from November 3 to 7, 2019, concludes.

Abu Dhabi, November 7. Cuba was reelected as one of the 27 Members of the UNIDO Program and Budget Committee; Venezuela was also elected which, like Cuba, is part of the Industrial Development Board, until 2021.

The Ambassador of Cuba in the United Arab Emirates, Jorge Leon, presided over the Cuban delegation to the 18th CG. When speaking in the general debate, he said that the Abu Dhabi Declaration, adopted by the General Conference, reiterates our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and addresses an issue of extraordinary relevance: the urgency of States refrain from promulgating and unilaterally applying economic, financial or commercial measures, which are not compatible with international law and the Charter of the United Nations, measures that prevent the full achievement of economic and social development, particularly in developing countries. He also noted that: the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US Government against Cuba for almost sixty years is the most unjust, severe and prolonged unilateral sanctions system that has been applied against any state. He stressed that the blockade constitutes the main obstacle to the development of all the potential of the country and represents a brake for the implementation of both the National Economic and Social Development Plan of the country, as well as the 2030 Agenda and its Objectives.

In the context of the 18th GC, the 7th Industrial Development Forum was held and the 2020 Industrial Development Report was launched. Other events on circular economy also took place; gender; industry 4.0; sustainable energy; youth and entrepreneurship, and industrial parks.
