Kingston, Jamaica, 1 May 2020. As four decades ago, unionist Keith Comrie accompanied Cuba in May 1 parades and today, from his home in Jamaica, ratifies solidarity with the people of the largest island in the Antilles.
An executive member of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions, Comrie regards Cuba as his second home for, in his opinion, love and affection have never been lacking since his first visit in 1980.
In a dialogue with Prensa Latina via internet, the also Secretary General of the Union of School and Allied Workers expressed his gratitude for the Cuban aid to his country in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, and rejected the US economic, commercial and financial blockade.
Comrie, a representative in the Caribbean for the International Union of Agriculture and Allied Services based in France, conveyed a fraternal greeting to President Miguel Díaz-Canel, and to comrades of the Workers Central Union of Cuba (CTC).
During the dialogue with Prensa Latina, the honorary member of the CTC evoked his participation in multiple parades in the Plaza de la Revolución in Havana along with other union leaders, workers from all over the world and the Cuban capital's population.
The workers' leader expressed solidarity with friends from all over the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe, who "fight for better working conditions and are oppressed by imperialist governments, such as the aggressive United States against Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua."
Comrie recalled that in various countries the working class takes advantage of the May 1 celebrations to demand their rights and proper, favourable working conditions.
At the end of the 19th century, Chicago workers in the United States and France legitimized the date to commemorate International Workers' Day and defend their guarantees.
