AOSIS countries stand against coercive unilateral measures

New York, June 30, 2020. The Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS), released today their AOSIS Statement on Debt, where they expressed their solidarity with all countries in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic and emphasized that all efforts in this regard must be coordinated and guided by the best available science to protect the most vulnerable people and countries.

AOSIS members also called for the waiver of unilateral coercive measures that place overwhelming burdens on already struggling economies and expressed that during a pandemic as the current one, keeping these measures in place is little more than blind disregard for humanity.

The Statement recalled the UN Secretary-General’s call for the waiving of unilateral sanctions imposed on countries and call for global concerted action to this effect.

Unilateral coercive measures hinder and hamper the fight against COVID-19 in countries affected by them and at the same time they affect the promotion and enjoyment of all human rights, including the right to life, the right to development, health and food. Such measures are an obstacle to the development of peoples and a threat to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the SAMOA Pathway.

AOSIS consists in 44 small islands from the regions of the Pacific and Indian Ocean, the Caribbean and the seas of Africa, India and South China. Cuba is member state of this organization.
