Namibian youngster receives a scholarship to study in Cuba.

Namibia, December 16th, 2020 - At the headquarters of the Cuban Embassy in Namibia, the young Matheus Natangwe Mwelihanyeka signed, in an official ceremony, the documents that endorse the beginning of his studies in Medicine in Cuba, as part of a scholarship granted by the Cuban government. Matheus was selected from a large group of candidates for his excellent academic results.

The Cuban ambassador to Namibia, Sidenio Acosta, who presided over the ceremony, urged the young Namibian to strive to achieve excellent academic results. Likewise, she invited him to prepare hard to help raise the health indicators of the Namibian people.

For his part, the economic-commercial advisor of the Cuban Embassy, ​​Juan Carlos Oliva, highlighted the efforts made by Cuba to continue supporting other sister nations in the formation of sister resources, above all, in the current context, marked by the impact of Covid-19 and the reinforcement of the US blockade.

Matheus and his father, also present at the meeting, thanked the Cuban people for the gesture. In addition, the prospective student expressed his commitment to work hard to become an excellent healthcare professional.

Other members of the Cuban State Mission in Namibia also participated in the ceremony.

Namibia and Cuba established ties since the 1960s of the 20th century, in the time of the liberation struggle of this African country. In these years, about 1,350 young Namibians have studied or are studying in Cuba. The first group of them arrived on the island in 1978, after the Cassinga Massacre. Similarly, since 1990, the year of Namibia's independence, more than 4,300 Cuban aid workers, in various sectors, have provided their services in this country.
