Jakarta, January 19.- The Jakarta Post newspaper published an article referring the decision of the United States, just nine days before the end of the Trump´s administration, to include Cuba in the list of states sponsoring terrorism, while qualifying the measure as a last-minute obstacle to the expected efforts of President-elect Joe Biden to ease tensions with the Island
Citing what was collected by AFP, regarding the fact that the recent provision will severely hamper foreign investment to Cuba, it notes that this is the latest movement in a bombardment of decisions by the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo in his last days in the position, with the Senate focused on impeachment to President Trump for inciting a riot in the Capitol of that country on January 6th.
The text contrasts the above with the decision of then-President Barack Obama in 2015 to exclude Cuba from the aforementioned list, aimed at normalizing bilateral relations, considering the US effort as failure half a century of isolating the Caribbean island. He also highlights that Biden has considered the intention to resume the commitment begun under the Obama´s Administration, including trips to Cuba more flexible and sending remittances.
The article also states that the retreat by Trump of many of the measures adopted by Obama towards Cuba and the sanctions that during these years has also imposed to Venezuela, earned him support among immigrant communities in Florida, a crucial state in the past US elections.
