73 UNGA: Statement by Cuba at the thematic debate on the Role and Authority of the General Assembly held within the framework of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the Work of the General Assembly. New York, March 19, 2019.

Co-Chairs,

We appreciate the convening of this thematic debate on the Role and Authority of the General Assembly. We endorse the statement by the delegation of Algeria on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.

When we speak of the General Assembly, we refer to all the States it comprises, under equal conditions and without distinction, for this reason, it is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the UN.

71 UNGA: Statement by the Representative of Cuba, Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Versón on the adoption of the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty.

Madam President:

The adoption of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons represents a historic milestone. More than a result of the Conference that we are successfully concluding today, this instrument is the result of a process of multilateral discussions over 70 years, which began with the adoption by the UN General Assembly of its first resolution, on January 24, 1946, which called for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

71 UNGA: Cuba at the Decolonization Committee, on Agenda item: The Question of Puerto Rico.

Mr. President,

This session of the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples is undoubtedly a historic day.

We are deeply honored by the presence of Oscar López Rivera, as Petitioner, a fighter against colonialism for the self-determination and independence of his people, who was in United States prisons for more than 35 years for fighting for the freedom of his homeland.

71 UNGA: Cuba at the beginning of the Second Session of the UN Conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons leading towards their total elimination.

Madam Chair,

First and foremost, I would like to express the satisfaction of the Cuban delegation to see that a representative of a Latin American sister nation is presiding over this important Conference. I wish you success in undertaking your important responsibilities and I assure you that you can count on the support of our delegation.

I also take this opportunity to welcome the new High Representative of the United Nations for Disarmament Affairs, Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu.

71 UNGA: Cuba at the Session of the Committee on Decolonization on the Question of Western Sahara.

Mr. Chairman,

Fifty-four years ago, the Special Committee on Decolonization of the United Nations declared Western Sahara as a non-self-governing territory. In the past 21 years several resolutions of the General Assembly, the Security Council and the African Union have ratified the right to independence and self-determination of the Saharawi people pursuant to United Nations resolution 1514 (XV) on the granting of the Independence to colonial countries and peoples.

71 UNGA: Cuba at the General Debate of the 39th session of the Committee on Information.

Mr. Chairman,

We would like to express our gratitude to Mrs. Cristina Gallach, Under-Secretary-General, for her work as head of the Department of Communications and Public Information, and we welcome Mr. Maher Nasser, Acting Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, to whom we wish success in his work.

71 UNGA: Statement by Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, at the Inaugural session of the United Nations Disarmament Commission.
