Statement by Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Permanent Representative of Cuba to United Nations at the presentation of the Rev.1 of the Pact for the Future.

New York, 15 May 2024, 3pm, General Assembly Hall

Dear co-facilitators,

At the outset, I would like to express our appreciation for the work you have done so far.

While we have not had enough time to go deep in this new document you have prepared, we see that this is better done both in terms of format and content. Pending our review of the document, we would like to share some general thoughts.

It is our hope that from now on, once the interests and positions from all have been expressed, we could have a sincere exchange among the membership to secure an outcome mutually acceptable for everyone.

The title of this document invites us to have a higher commitment with the process. In this regard, we wish that during this incoming round of exchanges, delegations make an effort to fully explain their views. Even if we might disagree on certain areas, it is always important to understand each other´s perspectives.

At this critical stage of the negotiation, we should not pretend to deny what has been agreed upon in the past, nor to seek to impose views on others. We have already seen this approach in previous meetings and we hope this be avoided to build an environment of trust.

We would also like to reiterate once again that the Summit of the Future was conceived essentially to turbocharge the SDGs, in the words of the Secretary General. Therefore, the content of the Pact needs to be quite focused on this and to present concrete deliverables in this regard.

With this in mind, we will keep coordinating in a constructive spirit in the context of the G77 and China the LMG. We hope we all could maintain this focus in the meetings to come.

I thank you
