Statement delivered by Cuba in the Joint Meeting of the ECOSOC and the Peacebuilding Commission on Haiti.

Mr. President:

We support the legitimate right of the Haitian people to find a peaceful and sustainable solution to the serious, multidimensional crisis they are facing.

We believe that a real solution to the enormous challenges resulting from centuries of colonial and neocolonial plundering and foreign intervention requires the following:

  1. an international flow of financial support that enables the country to relaunch its economy and effectively combat its main social and economic problems;
  2. effective aid mechanisms must guarantee the efficient use of resources for the Haitian people;
  3. a long-term development strategy, as repeatedly promoted by CARICOM.
  4. respect for Haiti's sovereignty without external interference.

Cuba has always supported peace, stability, and development in Haiti. For years, Cuban health professionals have supported the Haitian people, even in areas affected by earthquakes, cholera outbreaks, and the Covid-19 pandemic. We have also collaborated with Haiti on projects related to education, sports, agriculture, fishing, construction, water resources, and the environment. Our country will continue to provide Haiti with solidarity and selfless cooperation in areas that impact the socioeconomic development of its people.

Thank you
