UNDP acknowledges Cuba's commitment to sustainable development

Havana, 17 March 2021. Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Ivan Zverzhanovski on Wednesday acknowledged Cuba's commitment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, approved in 2015.

It is very clear that it is a priority for the Cuban government, it is working in a very committed way and its National Development Plan for 2030 is very aligned with these objectives, Zverzhanovski expressed in exclusive statements to Prensa Latina.

On March 2, 2021, there was an illegal departure from Cuba through the northern coast of the province of Villa Clara, which was organized from the US territory using a go-fast boat for a human smuggling operation. The group of persons involved in such operation, all them Cuban nationals, which included women and children, were taken by the human smugglers to the inhospitable and inhabited Cay Sal Bank in the Bahamas. The Cuban Border Guard reported in real time the occurrence of this event to the United States Coast Guard.

Cuba presents to the Security Council the negative impact of the blockade on the island's food security

New York, 11 March 2021. Today Cuba presented to the Security Council open debate on "Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Food Security", the priority given by the Government of the island to food security, which is endorsed in the Constitution of the Republic and is materialized through Cuba´s National Plan for Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education, approved in July 2020.

Cuba refuses to describe mercenaries as human rights defenders

Geneva, 8 March 2021. Juan Antonio Quintanilla, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations (UN) Office at Geneva, rejected in this city on Monday the description of criminals and mercenaries at the service of foreign powers as human rights defenders.

Upon addressing a virtual forum of the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which entered its third week this Monday, the Cuban ambassador stressed that such a noble term should not be used for those individuals.
