Ambassador of Cuba meets with Assistant Director General of UNESCO for Natural Sciences
At the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the Ambassador of Cuba Maria del Carmen Herrera Caseiro met with the Assistant Director General of UNESCO for Natural Sciences, Ms. Lidia Brito, on which occasion they exchanged widely on the close relations between the Island and the international Organization, especially in the area of science. In the cordial meeting, Mrs. Brito recognized the development of science and scientific work in Cuba, a context in which the Cuban diplomat recalled the words of the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro Ruz, when on January 15, 1960 in the speech delivered at the Academy of Sciences he expressed that the future of Cuba had to necessarily be a future of men of science.

The Ambassador of Cuba, Maria del Carmen Herrera Caseiro participated in the exchange with the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Mr. Simon Stiell, organized by the president of the Executive Board of UNESCO to discuss the issue of climate change and UNESCO's role in combating this global challenge. In her intervention, the Permanent Representative of Cuba referred to the need to undertake urgent actions and assume more ambitious commitments to confront the climate crisis, emphasizing the obligation of developed countries to take the lead by virtue of their historical responsibility and as established in the Convention and its Paris Agreement. “We all have a duty to contribute, but it is first and foremost up to developed nations to raise ambition, not only in terms of emissions reductions, but also in providing appropriate means of implementation to developing countries,” she reaffirmed.

This afternoon, the Assistant Director General for Education of UNESCO Ms. Stefania Giannini, received the Ambassador of Cuba to the Organization María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro. In the cordial meeting, the Cuban diplomat reaffirmed Cuba's commitment to UNESCO, especially in the sphere of education. In this sense, she highlighted the priority that the island's government gives to this sector and to the promotion of quality, inclusive and universal education as a fundamental human right. She referred to the progress made by Cuba in this field, despite the persistence of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed against the country by the United States government for more than 60 years.

In March 2024, the company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales S.A. (YPF) of the Republic of Argentina informed the airline Cubana de Aviación of its refusal to continue supplying fuel to its aircrafts, in application of the United States blockade against Cuba.
Cuban Ambassador participates in GRULAC plenary meeting at UNESCO
Today morning, the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Cuba to UNESCO, María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro, participated in the plenary meeting of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States at UNESCO. At her first plenary meeting of the Group, the countries of the region warmly welcomed the Cuban representative, highlighting Cuba’s activism at UNESCO in defending and promoting the priorities of Latin America and the Caribbean. Ambassador Herrera Caseiro expressed Cuba’s full commitment to continue promoting the interests of our region in UNESCO’s areas of competence and to continue strengthening cooperation, unity and regional integration.
