Glasgow, 27 August 2026.—On Thursday 27 August, Ambassador Ismara Mercedes Vargas Walter organised a wide-ranging programme of events in Glasgow to mark the centenary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and the 24th anniversary of the twinning of Glasgow and Havana.
Cuba’s educational innovation and methodological commitment have featured prominently at the 2026 edition of IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language), one of the world’s leading forums in this field.
One of the highlights was the presentation by Professor Eduardo Garvey Savigne, entitled “Assessment of English for Medical Purposes in Cuba: Perspectives from Within”, which highlighted the strength of language training in the island’s healthcare sector.
The rector of the Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas (UCLV), Dr. Luis Antonio Barranco Olivera, heads the delegation visiting the University of Glasgow as part of the strengthening of academic and scientific links between the two institutions.
The delegation is made up of Dr Yanelis Delgado Triana, Director of International Relations; Dr Anabel Díaz Hurtado, Vice-Chancellor; and Dr Ginley Durán Castellón, Director of University Assets.
Dr. José Fernando Martirena Hernández, director of the Centre for Research and Development of Structures and Materials (CIDEM) of the Central University Marta Abreu de Las Villas (UCLV), made a working visit to the United Kingdom as part of his international academic collaboration agenda in the field of technological innovation and sustainability in construction materials.
On December 6 and 7, Ambassador Ismara Vargas visited Glasgow to promote academic, cultural and solidarity initiatives between the two cities. The visit was marked by meaningful engagements that underscored the strong and enduring relationship between Havana and Glasgow, twin cities since 2002.
Within the framework of the VIII International Festival of the University of International Relations of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ADA), the diplomatic mission of Cuba in this Caucasian nation promoted the tourist destination of the Island among those attending the event.
The Cuban ambassador, Alfredo Nieves Portuondo, thanked the rector of the high institution and deputy minister of the Azeri chancellery, Hafiz Pashaev, for the invitation to the event.
New Delhi, August 10, 2016. The Department of Germanic Languages and Spanish at the University of New Delhi, in coordination with the Embassy of Cuba in India organized a Festival of Cuban Culture from the 10 to August 13 to pay tribute to Fidel with documentaries, exhibitions of posters, paintings, poems, plays, music and dance at the headquarters of the University of Delhi.
