Paramaribo, March 1. This Monday morning the Ambassador of Cuba to Suriname, Igor Azcuy González had a cordial meeting with Dr. Gregory Rusland who is the leader of the National Party of Suriname (NPS) and of its parliamentary faction. In the meeting they had an exchange of ideas about the realities that both their countries are facing and the challenges that Covid has presented in the health and economic sectors. Likewise the Cuban medical cooperation in Suriname was discussed and the challenges of this collaborative project. The Cuban Ambassador communicated the possibility of Cuba offering Suriname in the second half of 2021 a vaccine against Covid. This particular vaccine is one of the four Covid vaccines that the island is currently developing.
In another topic during the meeting, the Cuban representative inquired about the possibility that the NPS faction in Parliament would denounce the inclusion of Cuba in the list of terrorist countries compiled by the State Department of the USA. Dr. Rusland was finally also asked for his support in creating a Cuba-Suriname Parliamentary Friendship Group, a mechanism through which positive work experiences could be exchanged that could be beneficial to the most vulnerable sections in both countries.
The meeting took place in a very fraternal atmosphere and Dr. Rusland recalled the occasion in 2005 when during a multilateral event he had an exchange with Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban Revolution.
