In an exclusive interview with Prensa Latina during his stay in Panama, the essayist and political scientist, an expert on Latin American and Caribbean issues, stressed that if there is a country that has been a victim of terrorism, it has been Cuba.
For Borón, terrorism is subjecting a nation to a comprehensive blockade for more than 60 years, and this is done by the country whose government in 1945 dropped the only two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, "the largest terrorist attack in the history of humanity," he said.
On the other hand, he recalled, Cuba has been the host and guarantor of all the negotiations that have taken place to advance the peace process in Colombia.
The listing, he added, is senseless and does affect the daily lives of people on the island.
According to the professor, the Cuban government has reacted with dignity to the new measures and pressures of the current administration of Donald Trump and his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
Regarding the "hawk" in foreign policy, he said that he differs from what is said about him being Cuban-American. "If he had a single bit of Cuban blood in his veins, he would not go so far as to propose inflicting greater punishments, suffering and misfortunes on the Cuban people. He is just another American, a servant of the imperial plan," he stressed.
Regarding the new attacks by Trump and Rubio against Havana, Borón urged to redouble efforts and concrete actions of international cooperation and solidarity, beyond diplomatic forums.
In his opinion, Cuba has been the most supportive country in the world and, as has been said on many occasions, it has given not only what it has left over, but also what it had in small quantities, which is a sign of the altruism and generosity of its people.
In this regard, he pointed out that Cuba needs more emotional support and in this regard he praised the support provided by nations such as Mexico in delicate moments of the situation on the island.
The Libertador Prize for Critical Thinking (2013) called for reciprocating with concrete actions the help Cuba has shown in many spheres, including ophthalmological surgeries, as part of Operation Miracle that restored sight to many people, or in education with the literacy program “Yes, I can.”
Regarding Washington's hostile policy, which has been intensified by the current occupant of the White House, he explained that what lies behind it is the theory that if you make Cubans suffer, they will rise up in arms or organize huge popular demonstrations against the government.
"Cubans may be upset by the power cut or the lack of some products, but they have a patriotic, Martian (José Martí) and Fidelista (Fidel Castro) sentiment, which will never turn them into pawns in a project to destroy their economy or absorb Cuba into the United States," he stressed.
