Cuba commemorates anniversary of liberation of Cuban heroes

Havana, Dec 17 (Prensa Latina) Deputy Prime Minister Inés María Chapman, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez and Cuban institutions are commemorating on social media today the tenth anniversary of the release of Cuban heroes imprisoned in the United States.

On the social network X, Chapman recalled the promise of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, that Fernando González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, René González and Gerardo Hernández would return to their homeland.

The Cuban deputy minister said that "the Five are the symbol of loyalty, courage, humility and revolutionary commitment. Our admiration and respect."

On the same platform, the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs said that it has been 10 years since the return to Cuba of Gerardo, Antonio and Ramón, three of the Five Heroes, who for more than 16 years were imprisoned in the United States for defending their country from terrorism organized and financed from that country.

“We will never forget that Fidel raised his voice on behalf of the people and when it seemed impossible for the Five to return to their homeland, after being unjustly imprisoned in the United States, he promised that we would return and here we are,” said Gerardo Hernández, one of the five anti-terrorist fighters.

The Cuban Prosecutor's Office announced that Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino and Antonio Guerrero returned to their country 10 years ago, marking the end of a struggle waged by the Cuban people to free five of their sons from unjust imprisonment.

Following a humanitarian agreement between the governments of the United States and Cuba, Ramón, Antonio and Gerardo were released on December 17, 2014.

Fernando and René were reportedly released in 2011 and 2014 respectively.

Likewise, institutions such as the Ministries of Transport and Finance and Prices joined in the celebration by reproducing the words of Fidel Castro: “Our heroes will have to be freed. The enormous injustice committed against them will be known by the entire world… Our comrades, sooner rather than later, will return!”
