New York, 15 September 2020. The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), composed of 54 Member States, elected Cuba con monday to occupy a seat, starting in January 2021, in the following subsidiary bodies: the Commission on Population and Development, the Executive Board of the UN Development Programme / UN Population Fund / UN Office for Project Services and the Committee for Programme and Coordination.
Cuba gained 52 votes out of 54 possible votes in all bodies.
Cuba could have been elected without a vote, since the number of candidates was equal to or less than the number of vacancies for the abovementioned bodies. However, the United States delegation decided to request a vote to these candidatures.
Despite US maneuvering, Cuba had the support of the overwhelming majority of ECOSOC members, which is a sign of the recognition that the Cuban diplomacy has in this UN main body.
