Representatives of Cuba presented before ten experts from the United Nations Committee Against Torture, the broad and solid system of laws, norms, regulations and policies that guarantee the integral protection of the person on the Island, in accordance with the provisions of the Convention.
As reported by the Cuban Foreign Ministry on its website, from April 21 to 29, the Caribbean delegation presented its periodic report in Geneva, by virtue of its commitments as a State Party to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment.
The delegation was chaired by Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson, General Director of Multilateral Affairs and International Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Also present were Cuban specialists from the Attorney General's Office, the Supreme People's Court, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During his intervention, they explained extensively the actions conceived and applied to prevent the occurrence of acts of torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in the national territory, frequent before 1959 and radically eliminated and prohibited by the Cuban Revolution, adds the Minrex.
In recent years, these deplorable practices have only been maintained in the portion of the national territory that is illegally occupied by the United States Naval Base in Guantánamo Bay, they denounced.
As part of their assessment, the Committee's experts recognized the country's important results in complying with the provisions of the Convention, even in the hostile context in which Cuba operates, marked by the blockade.
