Cuba's Deputy Minister of Agriculture begins working visit to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

Rome, October 16th, 2023. Maury Hechavarría Bermúdez, Deputy Minister for Cuba, starts a work visit to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), until October 27th.

Hechavarría, the head of the Cuban delegation, will carry out a comprehensive Program, including several activities such as the World Food Day, World Food Forum, 51st Session of the Committee on World Food Security, which will be held at FAO headquarters.

World Food Day, one of the most celebrated dates in the United Nations calendar, on this occasion will focus on water as the base of life and food.

Cuba, a founding member State of FAO, explicitly endorses the right to adequate food in the Constitution of the Republic. It has a "Law on Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security", which recognizes drinking water as food. The "Law of Terrestrial Waters" provides its integrated and sustainable management, its protection and the establishment of measures for the reduction of disasters derived, mainly, from hydrometeorological events, which evidences the government's hydraulic will.

The Cuban delegation will present the policies implemented by the country to develop more sustainable, resilient and inclusive food systems; and will denounce the negative impact of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the government of the United States, in this particular sphere.
