Freetown, September 28. - The Director of the Americas and Asia-Pacific Division of Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Dr. Mohamed K. Mansaray, together with the official assigned to Cuba affairs, Ms. Isatu Aziza Sowe, received the Cuban Ambassador, Ms. Norma Sánchez Águila, at the headquarters of the Sierra Leonean Foreign Ministry.
During the working meeting, Ambassador Sánchez Águila expressed her gratitude for Sierra Leone’s support for Cuba in its struggle to end the economic, financial, and commercial blockade imposed by the United States for more than 67 years. The Cuban diplomat provided a comprehensive update on the difficult economic situation Cuba is facing as a result of the U.S. blockade policy in place for nearly seventy years and the current energy blockade, which has been exacerbating the most basic living conditions of the Cuban people from late January of this year to the present.
During the exchange, she also emphasized that Cuba poses no threat to the security and stability of the U.S. or any other nation, and warned him about the marked attempts by Washington to generate conflict, discontent, and internal destabilization on the island, thereby seeking to create a pretext to “justify” potential military action against the Caribbean nation.
Sánchez Aguila explained in detail the main points of the report that Cuba will present to the United Nations General Assembly on October 27 and 28, regarding the economic, commercial, and financial damages caused by the U.S. blockade over the past year, which exceed $8,083 million and constitute, in practice, collective punishment for the entire nation and “hits hard” in all areas of daily life.
For his part, Director Dr. Mohamed K. Mansaray expressed his gratitude for the explanation and lamented the difficult situation the Cuban people are unjustly enduring; he offered his best wishes for a peaceful resolution and the lifting of the embargo, reiterating that Sierra Leone would continue to work on developing bilateral relations with the island, both economically and in the multilateral sphere. In addition, the official assigned to Cuba affairs, Ms. Isatu Aziza Sowe was present during the meeting.
