Ministers of Education and Mental Health of Grenada receive the Ambassador of Cuba.

St George, February 21. The Minister of Education of Grenada, Honorable Senator David Andrew and the Minister of Mental Health, Welfare and Religious Affairs, Honorable Delma Thomas, received the Ambassador of Cuba Ivette Martínez Leyva in their respective offices. The diplomat reviewed the status of cooperation interests in both areas, some with proposals for memorandums of understanding, such as the implementation of the “Yo Si Puedo” literacy program in certain parishes of Grenada.

The Minister of Education David Andrew thanked Cuba for the historic support in the training of Grenadian professionals and referred to his pleasant experience in participating in Pedagogy 2023. The Ambassador commented on the field of Special Pedagogy in Cuba with emphasis on educational attention to students with autism spectrum disorder, as a possible area of collaboration and technical assistance.

The Minister of Mental Health Delma Thomas referred to the priority that the current government is giving to mental health care and thanked the three Cuban professionals who work at the Mt Gay psychiatric hospital for their contribution. For her part, the Ambassador explained about the operation of the network of specialized services for comprehensive care for mental disorders in Cuba, inserted from primary health care, with Crisis Intervention Units, Dishabituation Centers for Adolescents, Hospitals Day and Psychosocial and Mental Health Support Line.

When addressing religious matters, Hon. Thomas explained the functioning of the Parishes and their connection to the Ministry, while the diplomat shared the experience of the macro-ecumenical association Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Center, which prophetically accompanies the Cuban people and their Churches with socio-theological training, popular education and promotion of international solidarity.
