The UK Fire Brigades Union sends a message of solidarity following the fires at the Matanzas Supertanker Base.

London, 9 August 2022- In a message to the General Secretary of the Central of Workers of Cuba (CTC), Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, the Assistant General Secretary of the UK Fire Brigades Union, Andy Dark, stated:

Solidarity with Cuban firefighters and CTC

I write this on behalf of the members and officials of the Fire Brigades Union, the principal trade union representing uniformed fire service personnel in the UK.

We have been following the tragic developments arising from the devastating fire in Matanzas. As on all such occasions, your members have risen to the challenge and selflessly intervened to contain and extinguish this fire in order to save lives, reduce injuries, protect homes, and the economic infrastructure.

It is with deep sadness that we have learned, at time of writing, that 17 firefighters are missing. We join you in the hope, that despite our worst fears, that these comrades are found alive and well.

In this short letter, we send our warmest greetings, express our admiration for solidarity and with all Cuban firefighters and the CTC.

In unity, in friendship and with our best wishes.

Andy Dark

Assistant General Secretary

On behalf of all members and officials of the Fire Brigades Union (UK)
