THE WORLD AGAINST THE BLOCKADE TO CUBA
African Union
For the thirteenth consecutive time, the Assembly of the African Union, composed of the Heads of State and Government of Africa, adopted the "Resolution on the Lifting of the Economic, Commercial and Financial Embargo imposed on the Republic of Cuba by the United States of America". The text expresses deep concern about the continuation of the illegal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on the Cuban government and people and reaffirms its full support for the Resolution on this subject approved every year by the UN General Assembly.
Syria
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday condemned the blockade the United States has imposed against the island and considered that it is an act of economic terrorism and genocide. We reiterate our energetic rejection and condemnation to the blockade that violates International Law and the most elementary human rights, the Foreign Ministry stated in a communique issued this Monday. The note urged the international community to act immediately to put an end to this criminal and immoral policy imposed by Washington. This US genocidal policy pretends to restrict the legitimate rights of the Cuban people to defend their sovereignty and stability without the US hegemony, the text stated. The Foreign Ministry expressed its confidence that the Cuban people, which have been facing this illegal blockade for more than 60 years, will continue preserving their sovereignty and will frustrate the objectives of that siege.
United Kingdom
- Over a thousand Brits signed an open letter to US President Joe Biden asking him to lift the blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba back on February 3rd, 1962, on the framework of the British campaign of solidarity with Cuba on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the entry into force of the policy. The open letter was published on the website of the Campaign for Solidarity with Cuba (CSC) in the United Kingdom (cuba-solidarity.org.uk) . “You (Biden) have the power to change the lives of millions of Cubans with a stroke of the pen, and start a path of peace and cooperation with the Cuban people,” the letter says, and stresses that the anachronistic policy is causing enormous damage to Cuba’s population, not limited to food and medicine shortages, worsened by the extra measures imposed by Trump and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Russia
Russian diplomats, activists and representatives of solidarity organizations with Cuba reiterated the need to make visible the impact of the US blockade. The academic Leonid Savin, president of the Fidel Castro Foundation in Moscow, described the US policy towards Cuba as genocidal and in violation of international law. Savin stressed that the Washington government maintains its policy of double standards towards Cuba by pressuring other nations to take sides against the island, while ignoring the call of the international community to eliminate the blockade. Ekaterina Andreeva, a young translator for the Russian YouTube channel Europe for Cuba, described the unilateral measures imposed by the United States against Cuba as a “true crime”. Andreeva rejected the countless fake news and propaganda against Cuba growing in the Western media and on social networks, at a time when Cuba is suffering an economic crisis caused by the blockade and the global impact caused by the Covid-19.
Leftist Group of the European Parliament
MEPs visiting Cuba denounced the extraterritorial effects of the US blockade and the smear campaigns against Cuba. Washington’s blockade violates the human rights of all the people of Cuba but also those of other nations, Sira Rego, vice president of a leftist group of the European Parliament, and Manu Pineda, vice president of the friendship group with Cuba in the legislative body, affirmed at a press conference. Both are part of a group of nine parliamentarians on an official visit to Cuba at the invitation of its government. Manu Pineda pointed out that the blockade generates serious effects in all fields that deteriorate the quality of life of Cubans, but this is also projected on the citizens of other nations.
