40th anniversary of the Latin American Studies program at Leiden University.

The Hague, April 18, 2026. The Cuban ambassador participated in the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Latin American Studies program at Leiden University.

The event took place at the prestigious university’s campus and brought together faculty, students, alumni, and numerous guests.

Several speakers highlighted the cultural richness and diversity of the Latin American and Caribbean peoples, as well as their influence in the Netherlands, and mentioned prominent figures, including the Cuban national poet Nicolás Guillén.

The program known as Languages and Cultures of Latin America (TLCA) was founded in 1986; in the early 2000s, it was renamed Latin American Studies (LAS). The Spanish and Portuguese program had existed since 1954, but beginning in 1986, it began to focus specifically on Latin America.
