46th Anniversary of the establishment of Cuba-Liberia diplomatic relations.

Monrivia, Apli 19th, 2020.- Cuba and Liberia are today celebrating the 46th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations, which have been characterized by cordiality and mutual support on issues on the international agenda.

Throughout these decades, the ties between the two nations have reflected the will to preserve and strengthen the fraternal ties that unite these two countries.

Among the most significant events in the bilateral relations are
- Visit to Cuba of Foreign Minister Charles Cecil Denis for a meeting of the NAM Coordinating Bureau in 1978.
- Visit to Cuba of Foreign Minister Charles Cecil Denis on the occasion of the IV NAM Summit in 1979.
- Visit to Liberia of the Vice Minister of MINREX Angel Dalmau in 2000.
- Visit to Cuba of Foreign Minister George Wallace on the occasion of the XIV NAM Summit in September 2006.
- Official visit to Liberia of the Director General of Bilateral Affairs of the MINREX Gerardo Peñalver on the occasion of the official reopening of the Cuban Embassy in Monrovia in December 2016.
- Working visit to Liberia of the Deputy Minister of MINREX Rogelio Sierra in September 2019.

One of the most relevant events was the arrival in Liberia of the Cuban Medical Brigade "Henry Reeve" as part of the group of 256 Cuban doctors who supported the fight against the Ebola epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa at the end of 2014. In October of that year, 53 Cuban specialists arrived in Liberia and spent six months supporting the Liberian government's efforts to eradicate this terrible disease.

In the history of our bilateral ties and as part of the historical relations of friendship and collaboration, the Cuban government has provided Liberia with scholarships for free studies in different specialties. Currently 7 young Liberians are studying medicine in Cuba and 2 others will join them this year.

Cuba will always appreciate the support of the government of Liberia in the fight against the criminal and cruel economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against our people. At present, this genocidal policy condemns us to deprivation and is the fundamental impediment to the acquisition of medicines, equipment and necessary materials. The blockade puts extraordinary pressure on Cuba to guarantee the material inputs and equipment that support the public health system and the specific conditions to face the current pandemic.

Both governments ratify their willingness to continue strengthening bilateral ties, as well as to explore other areas of cooperation for the benefit of both peoples.
