Friends, graduates, Palestinians and chess lovers expressed today in Lebanon through sport the solidarity with Cuba, in the context of the 62nd anniversary of the victory at Bay of Pigs.

Young people and adults who attend the Chess Room in the Palestinian camp of Chatila, in this capital, participated in a tournament on the occasion of the historical date that endorsed the friendship and support towards the Cuban people.

During the event, which started with the national anthems of Cuba and Palestine, the head of the Havana mission here, Jorge Leon Cruz, shared with the players and encouraged them to study the work of the world champion Jose Raul Capablanca to know his achievements, learn from his games and style of play.

During the activity in homage to the proclamation of the socialist character of the Revolution, the Cuban diplomat highlighted the courage of the people to defeat in less than 72 hours the invasion carried out by mercenary troops prepared and financed by the United States in April 1961.

He also emphasized that despite the tightening of the blockade, even in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Cuba continues fighting, resisting and living with the conviction of continuing to develop.

León highlighted the vision of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro "of sports as a right of the people", as well as the achievements during more than six decades in the massification of the practice of physical exercises and the successes in the international competitive scenario.

Prior to the start of the games, friendly voices highlighted Cuba's example for the free peoples of the world and its support for the independence, sovereignty and liberation of Palestine.

At the same time, those present exalted the historical ties between Palestinians and Cubans and expressed their condemnation of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington on the island for more than 60 years.

The diplomat moved the first piece to inaugurate the competition with a victory for Ahmad Al Asasi, escorted by Mohamad Nafaa and Ibrahim Monsour, second and third places, respectively.

The Victory Cup of Giron, organized here by the League of Palestinian Graduates in Cuban Institutes and Universities and the Chatila Chess Room, summoned 10 players, under the supervision of international judge Mahmoud Kashlu.

On Wednesday, April 19, the people of Cuba will commemorate 62 years of the military victory over a mercenary invading force, which constituted the first great defeat of U.S. imperialism in Latin America.
