Addis Ababa, February 2, 2026 (Prensa Latina).- The Vice-President of the African Union Commission (AU), Selma Malika Haddadi, today reaffirmed the historical ties that unite Africa with Cuba and the interest in exploring new ways to deepen bilateral cooperation.Haddadi expressed this on his Twitter account after meeting the previous day with the Cuban ambassadors to the African Union (AU), Lucas Domingo Hernández, and to Ethiopia, Meylin Suarez Álvarez, at the continental organization's headquarters.

"Our enriching and progressive exchange reaffirmed the historical ties between Africa and Cuba and explored concrete ways to deepen cooperation in health, education, science and innovation, culture, and multilateral diplomacy for the common benefit of our peoples," the post emphasized.
According to information sent by the Cuban Embassy to Prensa Latina, the meeting reaffirmed the excellent state of relations between Cuba and Africa, as well as the mutual desire to continue deepening cooperation and political dialogue.
The Vice-President of the Commission reaffirmed her confidence in and solidarity with Havana and highlighted the historical and current value of the ties between the Caribbean island and the African continent.
She acknowledged Cuba's sustained contribution to Africa's development, especially in key sectors such as health, education, and human resource development. She also praised Cuba as an example of resilience, dignity, and defense of its sovereignty in the face of prolonged external pressures.
For his part, Hernández expressed the deep gratitude of the Cuban government and people for Africa's firm and constant support in multilateral and bilateral forums, particularly in the fight against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States.
He reported on the new economic embargo implemented by Washington, as well as the repeated threats from its current administration and the renewed escalation of its aggressive policy, which directly affects the well-being of the Cuban people.
He reiterated Cuba's commitment to continue strengthening relations with the African Union and its member states, with the aim of expanding cooperation in areas of common interest, promoting the exchange of experiences, and consolidating a shared agenda in defense of peace, sustainable development, and social justice.
Both sides agreed on the importance of further strengthening the historic bonds of friendship and solidarity between Cuba and Africa, based on mutual respect, genuine cooperation, and the shared memory of the struggle for independence and self-determination of peoples.
