The African Union condemns the continuation of the United States blockade against Cuba

Addis Ababa, February 6, 2022. For the thirteenth consecutive time, the Assembly of the African Union, composed of the Heads of State and Government of Africa, adopted the "Resolution on the Lifting of the Economic, Commercial and Financial Embargo imposed on the Republic of Cuba by the United States of America".

The text expresses deep concern about the continuation of the illegal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on the Cuban government and people and reaffirms its full support for the Resolution on this subject approved every year by the UN General Assembly.

The African Union also regrets the setback in relations between Cuba and the United States and once again calls upon urges the Government of the United States to lift the prolonged and unjustifiable economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed on the Cuban people.

The text also regrets the measures implemented by the Government of the United States since November 9, 2017, which reinforce the blockade and expresses its deep concern about the extension of the extraterritorial nature of the blockade, including the full application of Chapter III of the Helms-Burton Act.

It recognizes that the negative impact of the blockade is aggravated and it is even more cruel in the current context, when Cuba is combating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Resolution recognizes that the blockade is the main obstacle for Cuba to implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and reaffirms Africa's solidarity with the Cuban people.
