London, 3 June 2026. A group of British MPs, peers and trade union leaders gathered outside the UK Parliament to express their firm rejection of the Trump administration’s escalating hostile actions against Cuba. They also called for a public stance of opposition to any threat of military intervention. This act of international solidarity reflects the growing concern within British civil society over the escalation of new US coercive measures and the increasingly bellicose rhetoric coming from Washington, which threatens regional stability and the principles of international law.
The event, organised by the Campaign for Solidarity with Cuba, brought together representatives from both houses of Parliament under a giant banner reading: ‘Stop Trump’s War on Cuba’. Twenty-three MPs and peers took part in this public demonstration, representing the broad legislative support for Cuba’s cause in the face of the serious situation with humanitarian repercussions currently affecting the island. Those present emphasised that this situation is a direct consequence of the prolonged US economic blockade, now in its seventh decade, and of unprecedented new unilateral coercive measures, such as the energy blockade imposed in 2026, designed to cut off fuel imports and the inflow of foreign currency. These policies, which the Trump administration has further intensified, have caused severe shortages of food, fuel and medicines, increasing the suffering of the Cuban people in what constitutes an act of collective punishment and raising well-founded fears of a military escalation that could destabilise the entire Caribbean region. Against this backdrop, the legislators called for opposition to US aggression, the defence of international law and support for Cuba’s self-determination.
This show of solidarity confirms Parliament’s growing opposition to US policy towards Cuba. A total of 117 MPs signed Motion 2739, which urges the British Government to uphold international law and oppose the latest measures imposed by the Trump administration. Meanwhile, seventeen senior trade union leaders have signed an open letter warning of a dangerous escalation in US hostility and expressing their solidarity with the Cuban people and trade unions at a time of grave crisis for the island.
During the event, several MPs made public statements, including Jeremy Corbyn, an independent MP and former Labour leader: “The measures against Cuba are repugnant and shameful. Oil must get through, medicines must get through, and these sanctions must end. The Cuban people must have the right to live their own lives and determine their own future, not Donald Trump.” For his part, Richard Burgon stated: “One hundred and seventeen Members of Parliament have signed a motion rejecting Trump’s scandalous new sanctions against Cuba. Today, outside Parliament, MPs from across the political spectrum have gathered in large numbers with a clear message: no to Trump’s war against Cuba and yes to the Cuban people’s right to determine their own future.”
In response to this cross-party initiative, the chair of the Cuba-UK Parliamentary Friendship Group, MP Enrique Alemán Gutiérrez, recently wrote a letter to Labour MP Steve Witherden, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Cuba. In it, he expressed “our deepest gratitude for your firm commitment to strengthening relations between our peoples and for your courageous stance in defence of the sovereignty and well-being of the Cuban nation”. The letter highlights that these gestures not only demonstrate a profound sense of humanity and justice, but also reaffirm the importance of parliamentary dialogue as a tool for the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the promotion of international cooperation.
This clear show of support for Cuban self-determination and sovereignty confirms the commitment of broad sections of the British Parliament and civil society to peace and an end to the US embargo.
International solidarity will remain a cornerstone of Cuba’s struggle for justice, peace and equality in international relations.
