British trade union movement reaffirms its support for Cuba

London, 28 January – The historic ties of solidarity between the British trade union movement and Cuba were once again evident during the meeting between Ambassador Ismara Vargas Walter and Paul Nowak, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), at the organisation's headquarters in London.

During the meeting, the Ambassador thanked the TUC for its constant support for Cuba, particularly in the face of recent actions and threats by the United States Government against our country. She also highlighted the historic position of the British trade union movement against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington, which she described as a criminal policy that directly affects the Cuban people.

He also expressed his gratitude to Paul Nowak for signing the ‘Urgent Appeal for Peace and Sovereignty in Cuba and Latin America,’ joining more than 100 British MPs and numerous public figures as a prominent trade union leader in supporting this important initiative promoted by the Campaign for Solidarity with Cuba in defence of peace, sovereignty and social justice in the region.

Vargas Walter updated the TUC General Secretary on the complex economic situation in Cuba, aggravated by the intensification of sanctions imposed during Donald Trump's administration, as well as by the extraterritorial impact of the blockade and the country's unjust inclusion on the list of state sponsors of terrorism (LPT).

Both parties agreed on the need to continue strengthening ties of cooperation and solidarity, emphasising that this is the most effective response to the policies of harassment and pressure against Cuba.

The meeting took place in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, reaffirming the mutual commitment to continue working to strengthen relations between Cuba and the British trade union movement.
