Ottawa, February 26, 2026.- Senator Judy White, co-chair of the Canada-Cuba Friendship Parliamentary Group, delivered remarks in the Senate plenary today, reaffirming solidarity with the Cuban people amidst the current circumstances of economic encirclement by the United States government.
In her statement, Senator White acknowledged the complex situation Cuba is currently facing and the consequences of the energy blockade imposed by the United States, which hinders the country's normal functioning and attempts to provoke a humanitarian crisis on the Island. In this regard, she recalled that the international community and Canada have repeatedly rejected the policy of blockade towards Cuba.
The Senator also highlighted that Canada has maintained uninterrupted diplomatic relations with Cuba since 1945 and that, over eight decades, both countries have built a relationship based on constant dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation, maintained independently. She also referred to the strong bilateral ties in the commercial, cultural, and tourism sectors, noting that nearly one million Canadians visit Cuba each year.
The speech concluded with a recognition of His Excellency Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Canada, who was present at the session, thanking him for his contribution in making visible the reality that Cuba experiences today.
