Catholic hierarchy in Trinidad and Tobago expresses solidarity with Cuba

Port of Spain, March 18, 2026. Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon, president of the Antilles Episcopal Conference, held a meeting with the Cuban ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Gustavo Véliz Olivares, at the headquarters of the Archdiocese of Port of Spain. During the meeting, both parties exchanged views on the current situation in Cuba, with emphasis on the impact of the energy blockade and its repercussions on the daily life of the population.

The Cuban diplomat expressed his gratitude for the statement issued by the Episcopal Conference, which conveyed concern about the effects on the basic needs of the Cuban people, as well as recognition of the solidarity that Cuba has historically provided to other countries. Likewise, the ambassador noted that the Cuban government and people continue working to find alternatives to overcome the current situation.
