Monrovia, March 6, 2020 - Within the framework of the celebrations taking place in Liberia on the occasion of International Women's Day, Chargé d'Affaires Mercedes L. Martínez Herrera had the opportunity to exchange and talk with the Honorable Williametta Piso Saydee-Tarr, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
In a pleasant meeting, they discussed the role of women in society from the Liberian and Cuban perspective.
The diplomat from the largest of the Antilles spoke about the role of Cuban women in the revolution, which has grown in a remarkable way due to their vocation for freedom and national independence, which has been evident throughout their country's history, and due to the high cultural and political preparation they have acquired, which has promoted a revolution of hundreds of women within the Revolution.
She indicated that the role of women in Cuban society today contributes to making the full exercise of women's equality, which is enacted in our laws and was recently endorsed in the new Constitution of the Republic, a reality in all areas.
For her part, the Liberian head of State pointed out that her commitment is based on continuously protecting women against sexual gender-based violence and promoting their participation in decision-making at the national level. She also explained the gender policies of African nations and shared knowledge for a unified and more proactive approach to the issues of empowerment of women and girls on the continent.
Liberia was the first African country to elect a woman as president of the nation.
