Monrovia, October 16th, 2018-, In the presence of a dozen national media with various spectra (radio, printed press and television), the Chargé d'Affairs of Cuba in Liberia, Yordenis Despaigne Vera, defended the right of Cuba to demand at the General Assembly of the United Nations, next October 31st the definitive, unconditional and unilateral lifting of the policy of economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States government against Cuba. In addition, representatives of some Liberian civil society organizations and the Liberia-Cuba Friendship Association were present at the press conference.
During the presentation, the young Cuban diplomat alluded to the legal framework that sustains a hostile policy of almost 60 years, aimed at undermining the Cuban socio-political system through precariousness of all kinds. He also stressed the extraterritorial nature of the blockade, by coercing, penalizing and preventing with all kinds of financial arbitraries the normal commercial and credit relations of Cuba not only with the North American companies themselves, but with third countries interested in the potentialities of the Cuban market. He made reference, with precise examples and concrete figures, to the impact of the blockade on the guarantee to the Cuban people of free and quality health and education services, the development of sports, the development of the tourism sector, cooperation with other countries, the banking sector, among other areas.
On the other hand, journalists and reporters, motivated by the presentation, inquired into the genesis of this aggressive policy. They were also interested in knowing about the consequences in the commercial relations of Cuba with third countries, especially from the warlike projection of the new North American administration; the role of the international community in Cuba's struggle for the elimination of the blockade and the mechanisms that the Caribbean island has sought to maintain its system and its indisputable social achievements despite such a suffocating policy.
