Closing ceremony of Hispanic/Latin American Heritage Month in Toronto dedicated to Cuba

The Consulate General of Cuba in Toronto in coordination with the Hispanic Heritage Council of Canada (HCHC) organized the closing ceremony of the Hispanic/Latin American Heritage Month celebration activities in Toronto, which was entirely dedicated to Cuba.

At the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, one of the most important theaters, located in the heart of the city and home of the Canadian Opera Company, a wonderful show entitled “Cuba: rhythms, colors and regions” was organized by the renowned Cuban dancer and choreographer José Ángel Carret, who is a member of our community.

In Carret’s words,  “the show was a walk through the musical rhythms and styles of Cuban dances, where the harmonious colors of our Caribbean Sea, the beauty of the fields, the aroma of coffee, the smell and color of rum, and the indisputable flavor of our Cuban sugar cane take over the bodies of the dancers to demonstrate the most authentic of our Cuban culture”.

The beautiful choreographies directed by Carret and performed by professional Cuban and Canadian dancers, with authentic and colorful costumes, were joined by classic Cuban musical themes interpreted by Roberto Linares Brown and the group Combo 76, such as “Chan Chan” and “El cuarto de Tula”.

Accompanied by musicians and dancers, the audience enjoyed a beautiful journey through the rich and authentic Cuban culture. In addition, the showcase of audiovisual capsules of Cuba Única tourism promotion campaign encouraged active participation in the Gala.

The Consul General thanked all those present for their interest. He also thanked José Ángel Carret and Mercedes Bernardez, directors of the Danza Corpus company, for organizing the Gala;  the musicians and dancers for their wonderful interpretations;  the director of partnerships and community programs of the Canadian Opera Company for the space, and especially Oscar Vigil and his team at the HCHC for providing our country with the opportunity of closing these important celebrations.

In his exchanges, the Consul General emphasized that this brief journey through music and dance, were small samples of the rich Cuban culture that unites and identifies us as a nation, and that is the expression of a small, brave, resilient, supportive, creative and joyful people.

It was a beautiful evening in which Cuba, its culture and its people, made the audience vibrate in the heart of Toronto.
