Commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations held in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, October 24, 2025.- The United Nations family in Ethiopia celebrated a commemorative day at UNECA's iconic Africa Hall, marking a new milestone in its commitment to global cooperation.

The event began with a musical procession, a ceremonial honor guard and a flag-raising ceremony in front of Africa Hall.

Senior UN officials, representatives of the Ethiopian Government, the African Union Commission and members of the diplomatic corps were present. On the Cuban side, the Cuban Ambassadors to the African Union and Ethiopia, Lucas Domingo Hernández Polledo and Meylin Suárez, respectively, attended.

In his remarks, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, stressed the importance of maintaining dynamic and committed multilateral organizations in defense of freedom and democracy and reaffirmed the African Union's commitment to Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ethiopia's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye, underscored the central role of the UN as a universal organization and Ethiopia's long-standing commitment to multilateralism.

The UN Secretary-General's message, delivered by ECA Executive Secretary Claver Gatete, reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between Ethiopia and the United Nations.
