SPECIAL COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE GROUP OF FRIENDS IN DEFENSE OF THE CHARTER OF THE UNITED NATIONS IN REJECTION OF LATEST MEASURES ANNOUNCED BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT FOR THE PURPOSE OF FURTHER TIGHTENING ITS CRIMINAL BLOCKADE ON THE REPUBLIC OF CUBA
1. The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations strongly condemns the announcement by the Government of the United States America of a new set of extreme measures aimed at further tightening the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed against the Republic of Cuba, through actions intended to obstruct the supply of oil to the country and to sanction third States that maintain legitimate commercial relations with Cuba.
2. The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations categorically reject the declared intention of the government of the United States of America to impose tariffs on goods from countries that, in the legitimate exercise of their sovereignty, sell or otherwise provide oil supplies to the Republic of Cuba. Such actions, based on a narrative built upon falsehoods intended to present the Republic of Cuba as a threat that it does not represent, seek to deliberately asphyxiate the Cuban economy and to inflict additional suffering on the Cuban people.
3. The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations stresses that the use of blackmail, intimidation and economic coercion to force other States to comply with unilateral policies, including through the threat or imposition of arbitrary and abusive tariffs, constitutes a flagrant violation of the rules of free trade, international law and the Charter of the United Nations. Such practices, in addition, undermine the principles of sovereign equality, non-intervention in the internal affairs of States and the right of peoples to self-determination.
4. The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations recall that for more than six decades the Cuban people have been subjected to the most prolonged and cruel economic, commercial and financial blockade ever applied against any country. In this context, the newly announced measures are clearly intended to aggravate, in a deliberate manner, the living conditions of the population and to deprive the Republic of Cuba of essential resources, including energy supplies vital for economic activity and social wellbeing.
5. The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations notes that these measures also demonstrate that the attempt to portray the blockade as a mere bilateral “trade embargo” is a distortion of reality that ignores its clearly extraterritorial scope and its profound impact on third countries and international economic relations.
6. The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations reiterate their unwavering solidarity with the People and Government of the Republic of Cuba and calls upon the international community to firmly reject this act of aggression, to reiterate the call of the General Assembly of the United Nations to lift the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the government of the United States of America against the Republic of Cuba, and to uphold international law, multilateralism and the respect for the Charter of the United Nations, in its entirety and interconnectedness.
