Consulate General of Cuba in Toronto commemorates the centenary of the birth of Fidel Castro Ruz

Toronto, August 15, 2026. — The Consulate General of Cuba in Toronto commemorated the centenary of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, with a solemn ceremony attended by members of the consular corps accredited in Toronto, members of the Cuban community, representatives of organizations in solidarity with Cuba, and members of the Communist Party of Canada and the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist).

The gathering also included the participation of officials and staff members of the Consulate General of Cuba in Toronto, who joined those present in paying tribute to the life and historic legacy of Fidel Castro.

During the event, Samantha Hislop, Co-Chair of the Canadian Network on Cuba, spoke about the importance of Fidel's legacy and his influence on solidarity relations between the peoples of Cuba and Canada.

A representative of the Association of Cubans Resident in Toronto “Juan Gualberto Gómez” also addressed the gathering, highlighting the ties between the Cuban community residing in Canada and the history and identity of Cuba.

As part of the program, an audiovisual presentation featuring interviews and testimonies from people who worked alongside Fidel Castro and shared different stages of his revolutionary journey was shown. The presentation offered an opportunity to recall aspects of his personality, leadership, and dedication to the causes he championed throughout his life.

The event also featured performances of songs dedicated to Fidel and the recitation of poems, in an atmosphere of respect and recognition for a figure who was one of the most prominent political leaders in the contemporary history of Cuba and Latin America.

In his closing remarks, the Consul General of Cuba in Toronto, Víctor Manuel García Sánchez, thanked those in attendance and highlighted the significance of commemorating the centenary of Fidel Castro's birth, as well as the enduring relevance of his historic legacy and his influence on generations of Cubans.

The event also served as an expression of the close ties among the Cuban community, solidarity organizations, and diplomatic and consular representatives accredited in Toronto, who came together on this occasion to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution.
