Cuba advocates for a just and sovereign transition during the Second Climate Week in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, September 2, 2025.- Michael Hernández Duarte, International Relations Specialist at CITMA, spoke at the plenary session of Climate Week 2025, where he reaffirmed Cuba’s stance in defense of climate justice.

In his statement, he emphasized that industrialized countries—accounting for only 19% of the world’s population but responsible for 68% of historical emissions—are failing to meet their commitments, while attempting to shift the burden of mitigation onto developing nations.

Duarte rejected unilateral measures, which he described as “climate protectionism in disguise,” due to their negative impacts on Southern economies.

He called on developed countries to undertake drastic emission reductions before 2030, fulfill their obligations on financing and technology transfer, and uphold multilateralism. “The time for excuses is over; the time for equity and justice is now,” he concluded.
