Ottawa, March 19, 2025 - The VI Meeting of Inter-Chancellery Political Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba and the Ministry of Global Affairs of Canada was held this Wednesday. The meeting was chaired by the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gerardo Peñalver Portal and his Canadian counterpart, His Excellency Mr. David Morrison.
During the talks, topics of common interest on the international and regional political situation were discussed, and the solid cooperation between Cuba and Canada, based on 50 years of development, was highlighted. Both parties agreed on the good state of bilateral relations and reiterated their willingness to continue strengthening political-diplomatic ties, as well as expanding economic-commercial and cooperation links.
Peñalver Portal thanked Canada for its traditional support in favor of the resolution against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba, as well as the aid received after the passage of hurricanes Oscar and Rafael at the end of last year 2024.
For his part, Morrison highlighted the importance of the present exchange mechanism between the two foreign ministries and ratified Canada's favorable vote in favor of the Cuban resolution at the United Nations demanding the lifting of the US blockade against the island, as it is contrary to international law and has extraterritorial effects.
Both parties reiterated their mutual willingness to continue developing bilateral relations in all spheres, highlighting the potentialities in the economic-commercial sector and investments.
The Canadian deputy minister was accompanied by Shalini Anand, deputy minister for the Americas; Sylvie Bédard, director general for Central America and the Caribbean; Marianick Tremblay, Canadian ambassador to Cuba and other representatives.
Also present on the Cuban side were the Cuban ambassador to Canada, Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz; and the director of Europe and Canada of MINREX, Ileana Núñez Mordoche, among other officials.
