Cuba and Ethiopia intend to advance in sports cooperation

Addis Ababa, May 18th 2021. This morning, the Cuban Ambassador, Mrs Vilma Thomas Ramírez, held a meeting with the Federal Commissioner of Sports of Ethiopia, Mr. Elias Shikur, at the headquarter of that institution.

Both sides exchanged on ways to advance the sport cooperation between the two countries, through the signature and implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation of Cuba and the Federal Sports Commission of Ethiopia. This agreement is focus on promoting the bilateral sport cooperation, conducting joint training bases and participating in competitive events organized in each country.

Cuba and Ethiopia have a long history of bilateral cooperation in several sectors. In the case of sports, Cuban trainers have supported Ethiopia´s development in areas as athletics, boxing, gymnastics and volleyball. Ethiopians have a long and world recognized tradition in athletics, mainly in long distance races, where they have well known Olympic and World champions.
