Vienna, May 14—A virtual meeting between Pablo Berti Oliva, Cuba’s ambassador to Austria (also accredited to Slovenia), and young Slovenian university students provided an opportunity for dialogue on the situation on the island, the intensification of the U.S. blockade, and ways to strengthen international solidarity.
The conference was organized by the Slovenian Student Association ISKRA, members and representatives of the “Predijmo Embargo” campaign, who recently traveled to Cuba as part of the main activities for May 1.
During his remarks, the Cuban diplomat detailed Cuba’s current situation, denounced the intensification of the U.S. blockade imposed through executive orders signed in January and May 2026, and emphasized the continued validity of the principle of international solidarity as the cornerstone of Cuba’s foreign policy.
For their part, the university students shared their experiences from their recent visit to the island, where they not only witnessed firsthand the effects of the blockade but also delivered aid in the form of medicines and other essential supplies for the Cuban people. They also committed to reinvigorating solidarity actions with Cuba from Slovenia, expanding European youth support for the Cuban cause.
The meeting strengthens the strategy of engagement and collaboration between the Cuban Embassy and Slovenian political forces, particularly in the area of solidarity, by connecting with new generations of Europeans committed to just causes. In this way, youth dialogue is established as a roadmap for solidarity that will guide the next steps in cooperation between the two peoples.
