Geneva, Friday, June 26, 2026 – Cuba addressed the Human Rights Council today, on behalf of the Group of Friends of the UN Charter, to express a message of solidarity and support to the government and people of Venezuela for the loss of life, the missing persons, the thousands injured, and the extensive material damage caused by the devastating earthquakes that affected several regions of the country.
In the joint statement delivered by Cuba, it was emphasized that the magnitude of the disaster demands an urgent and unconditional response of solidarity from the international community to support a swift recovery from this tragedy.
The Group of Friends of the UN Charter was created on July 6, 2021, and is comprised of some twenty states from various continents, including Cuba. The objective of this group is to safeguard the primacy of the Charter of the United Nations and International Law, advocating for strict respect for its principles, including sovereign equality, the peaceful settlement of disputes, the non-use or threat of use of force, and non-interference in internal affairs.
The Group maintains a firm position of rejection of unilateral coercive measures, such as the criminal and illegal economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States government against Cuba.
