Vienna, March 19. At the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Republic of Cuba deposited the instrument of extension of the Agreement on Cooperation for the Promotion of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARCAL). The formal ceremony was led by the Cuban Ambassador, Pablo Berti Oliva, and by the Director of the Latin America Division of the IAEA’s Department of Technical Cooperation, Luis Longoria Gandara.
With this step, Cuba reaffirms its commitment to regional cooperation and the promotion of the peaceful use of nuclear energy for development purposes. The extension of Cuba’s participation in ARCAL will allow for the continued development of joint projects in strategic sectors such as human health, food security, hydrology, and environmental protection—areas in which nuclear techniques are fundamental tools for the well-being of our peoples.
The ARCAL Agreement, signed in 1998, constitutes the main framework for regional cooperation in nuclear matters in Latin America and the Caribbean. Cuba has been part of this mechanism since its inception, actively participating in nuclear research and application projects, and contributing to the strengthening of the region’s scientific and technical capacities through South-South cooperation, with the support of the IAEA.
