Cuba expresses solidarity with victims of the Beirut Port explosion

The head of the Cuban mission in Lebanon, Jorge León, today expressed his solidarity with the victims and injured of the explosion at the Port of Beirut, exactly two years after the tragedy.

Together with Latin American representatives and the rest of the diplomatic corps accredited in this capital, León accompanied family members in the minute of silence ceremony convened in the vicinity of the port by the United Nations.

In light of the instability reported in recent days in the silos of the site, the remembrance ceremony took place around the Statue of the Immigrant, east of the terminal.

The activity was presided over by Joanna Wronecka, UN special coordinator for Lebanon and Nuncio Joseph Spireti, dean of the diplomatic corps accredited in Beirut.

On August 4, 2020, the ignition of more than two thousand tons of ammonium nitrate improperly stored for six years at the Port of Beirut caused the death of more than 200 people, injured 6,500 others and displaced thousands.
