Cuba-Pakistan: the faces of solidarity.

Pakistani friends at the Embassy of Cuba

Islamabad, March 27, 2021. In October 2005, when the first group of Cuban doctors from the Henry Reeve Brigade arrived in Pakistan to help the victims of the powerful earthquake in Kashmir, Jamal Nasir Malik and Sohaib Haider were two teenagers who dreamed of studying medicine; Muhammad Ramzan Mughal, a young photojournalist from Islamabad; and Attshan Ali Abbasi, a twelve-year-old boy who served as a translator for those strangers in white coats who arrived in his village loaded with medicine and hope.

Sixteen years later,  Dr. Jamal and Dr. Sohaib head the Pakistan Cuban Doctors Association, Muhammad is the president of the Pakistan-Cuba Social Forum and Attshan is on the board of the National Youth Assembly, the largest and most active youth organization in the country. They are the most visible faces of a growing solidarity movement eager to express their gratitude and support to our island in the most dissimilar ways.

To Jamal, Sohaib, Muhammad and Attsham, the Embassy of Cuba dedicated a modest but sincere tribute in these difficult times of pandemic and social distancing. Gratitude and commitment to the future were expressed at the meeting, in which the ambassador of the island gave a personal letter to each of these friends, honoring Marti's words:  "The friend of the humble deserves everything".
