Cuba participated in the Fifth World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments

Vienna, August 21, 2020. Cuba participated in the 5th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments, a virtual event from August 19 to 20, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in close coordination with the Austrian Parliament and the Organization of the United Nations (UN). The Cuban delegation that participated in the aforementioned meeting was chaired by Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People's Power of the Republic of Cuba.

The Conference was opened by the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, by the President of the IPU, Gabriela Cuevas Barron, and by Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the Austrian National Council. More than 150 presidents of parliaments, other legislators, experts and representatives of the UN participated in the meeting, with the aim of “mobilizing the international parliamentary community to act in the face of the health, climate and economic crises that the peoples and the planet ”.

In his speech, the President of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba denounced the intensification of the blockade of the United States against the Island, in the context of the pandemic and despite the multiple demands of the international community to put an end to this unjustified politics.

Likewise, the Head of the Cuban Delegation ratified the commitment of the National Assembly to continue working together with the parliamentarians of the world in the establishment of a democratic and fair international order that responds to the demand for peace, security, style and character, development of all the peoples of the world and contribute to the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
